Meet Dr. Melillo

Dr. Robert J. Melillo Co-Producer/ Brain Balance Music

One of the most respected specialists in childhood neurological disorders in America, Dr. Robert Melillo has been helping children overcome learning disabilities for over 20 years. His areas of expertise include: autism spectrum disorders, PDD/NOS, ADD/ADHD, OCD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, Tourette’s, bipolar disorder, and other mental, attention, behavioral and learning disorders. He is also and expert in diet, nutrition and neuroimmune disorders in children and adults.

As a clinician for 25 years, a university professor, brain researcher, best selling author, radio and TV host, his cutting-edge research and success with over a thousand children in his private program are what led to the creation of Brain Balance Achievement Centers. Brain Balance Centers are cutting edge supplemental learning centers catering only to children with various learning disabilities. Brain Balance Centers use a multi-modal, hemispheric curriculum focused on addressing the primary issue in most learning disabilities and behavioral disorders which is known as a functional disconnection. Since he introduced this concept, functional disconnection has become one the leading theories in the world related to Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and more. This work is leading the way toward understanding the underlying nature of these disorders and their causes.

In 2004, Dr. Melillo published Neurobehavioral Disorders of Childhood: An Evolutionary Perspective, a working theory textbook on developmental disabilities. This book continues to be utilized on both a graduate and undergraduate level in Universities around the world, it has been translated into Korean and Chinese. However, it was Dr. Melillo’s best-selling 2009 book, Disconnected Kids that catapulted him to national prominence. Greeted with overwhelming positive response, the thesis of that book serves as the foundation for the work being done at Brain Balance Centers around the country. Dr. Melillo’s leadership in the field, as well as his personal dedication to the creation of a drug-free multi-modal educational program for children with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s, and autism spectrum disorders, have made him one of the most sought-after speakers on the subject today, both in the U.S. and abroad. Disconnected Kids has been translated into Chinese, Korean and Hebrew and there are French and Italian versions being completed now.

His optimistic and straight-forward approach to overcoming childhood disorders has given hope to countless families throughout the world. His follow up book Reconnected Kids was released in 2011 and has also met with great success and has also been a best seller. This book was an inspirational book, which also helped parents to understand and address behavioral issues in their child using cutting edge brain science. His most recent and third book published by Penguin is a book simply entitled Autism, but it is another groundbreaking publication that takes on some very controversial topics. This book which was released in January 2013 addresses the causes of autism and whether in fact we are witnessing an epidemic and most importantly what are the environmental factors and genetic issues that increase the risk of a couple having a child with autism. He also has put together a cutting edge “preconception” program that he describes in the book to help to possibly prevent Autism and ADHD in a baby. He has a specialized practice in New York City where he works with children, and adults with ADHD and other neurological conditions. He is also working and conducting research on children with PANS, Pediatric acute neurological syndrome and PANDAS, which are neurological and immunological conditions that are poorly understood.

The latest book that Dr Melillo is a Diet and Nutrition Book directed towards kids and families with special needs, this book will also feature other authors, such as Grammy Award winner Zac Brown as well as other well-known chefs and authors, who will provide unique insight and recipes for this book.

As well as working with the Brain Balance Centers, Dr. Melillo is currently working with a group of international research labs as well teaching as a post graduate professor. He has been teaching his theories and techniques to health professionals around the world and has taught over 7000 professionals in several different countries and continents over the past 20 years.

He continues to teach over 1000 hours a year to health care professionals, teachers, researchers and parent groups. He is also serving as a curriculum consultant to Grammy Award winning musical artist Zac Brown, of the Zac Brown Band, who is creating his own special camp, Camp Southern Ground for neurotypical children as well as children with disabilities and their families. Dr Melillo has also appeared in dozens of television interviews and appearances including “The Doctors Show” on CBS and he has frequently appeared on Fox News and NBC, as an expert commentator, he has also done several hundred radio and TV interviews, nationally and internationally.

In 2013 Dr Melillo started hosting a weekly national radio blog show called The Brain Balance Radio Show which highlights each week a different Brain Balance Centers and the communities they serve, he also has interviewed many of the parents and kids who have been through the Brain Balance Program and have personally related their incredible stories of hope and success. In 2014 Dr Melillo and his wife Carolyn also started a cable TV show called The Dr Rob Show, it is a health, entertainment and lifestyle show directed toward the special needs community, it has been met with critical acclaim and achieved great success in a short period of time.

Dr Melillo along with his partner Lisa Erhard created and produced Brain Balance Music, it is specifically designed hemispheric based music. There is no other music of its kind and it has been utilized by many health and education professionals, as well as the Brain Balance Centers to help improve brain function and balance in both children and adults.

Very affordable earbuds/ Highly recommended

Recommended earbuds for listening to Brain Balance Music

The reason we feel that earbuds are the best option is that you can isolate your listening to stimulate either right or left hemisphere, although you can listen to our music through both ears and it will still have a stimulating effect.   If you use regular headphones, to isolate the listening to just one ear, you will need to move one headphone away from one ear, so it’s a little more cumbersome and not as comfortable as using an earbud.

Although earbuds range quite a bit in price, we’re going to start our recommendation for a very suitable and acceptable pair at the lowest end of the price spectrum.  With a full, crisp and clear sound, these are the Vogek tangle free flat cord ergonomic earbuds that offer high quality sound and are compatible with Samsung, Android, and more.  Beyond the highly affordable price they are engineered with a very thoughtful design. The angle makes them more comfortable and easier to put on, and the tapered off area makes it easy to hold them steady between two fingers when putting them on.

Not only are these great for adults, but if you’re using Brain Balance Music for your kids, you might prefer to use a lower priced earbud without sacrificing quality.  Sturdy too!  Compatibility: 3.5mm audio jack compatible with any 3.5mm audio devices including iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, iMac, PS3/PS4, MP3/MP4 Player and more.

We are endorsing these earbuds for Brain Balance Music.

Brain Balance Music

Brain Balance Music has been utilized by thousands of adults and children to help them achieve a more balanced brain and life.

This is the only hemispheric based music in the world, produced in association with Dr. Robert J. Melillo and it can be used simply and enjoyably to help achieve a more balanced brain and body.

Imbalances in the brain are believed to be related to all kinds of physical, mental, immune, cognitive, social, academic and physical symptoms. Although this music is not designed to diagnose, treat, or cure any specific illness, it is designed to help stimulate the brain in a very specific and safe way to try to help you achieve balance between the two hemispheres.

How should I listen to Brain Balance Music?

There is no hard and fast rule of how to listen, but there are recommendations that may help render the best results.

FLAT RESPONSE AND NO EQ

Brain Balance Music

Regarding headphones, we would recommend headphones with a “flat response” which means that no frequencies are favored, such as super boosted bass, as an example. This will allow the frequencies that the music was produced with to be the way they are intended. (In the near future we will feature our recommendations for specific models and brands.)

If you are listening to Brain Balance Music/ left brain stimulation music through speakers, it is best not to boost the bass. Instead leave all settings in the center, a more neutral position.

What is the reasoning here? Well, as an example, the left brain music is produced to not have bass frequencies, low notes. Some people may try to enhance the sound with EQ and boost the bass signal, but for stimulation of the left hemisphere, this would be counterproductive.

For left brain stimulation music, we do not want to have those low frequencies busting through!

For Right Brain Stimulation Music it’s fine to boost the bass response, because that will stimulate the right brain. But best to leave the rest of eq flat (no high frequencie tweaking).

Brain Balance Music

But, Brain Balance Music is already produced with the bass in there, and of course mid ranges.

What you don’t want is high frequencies coming through with Right brain stimulation music.

Brain Balance Music Listening Instructions for optimal results!

DIRECTIONS FOR USE/ Right brain stimulation music: You should listen to the music three to five times a day for at least ten-minute sessions. An mp3 player or cd player should be used with one earpiece taken out or removed. In this instance, you will listen to the music in the ear opposite the side of the brain hemisphere that we wish to stimulate i.e. music in the left ear for the right brain etc. If a player with headphones is not used and instead music is played through speakers, an earplug can be used in the ear that is on the same side of the brain as we wish to stimulate. For example, to stimulate the right hemisphere, place the earplug in the right ear. With the earplug in place, music can be played in the background. In this instance, the music should be kept on for at least 15 minutes. If you cannot tolerate either a player or an earplug, simply play the music in the background at the same volume level for 15 minute intervals. Since Brain Balance Music is specifically designed to stimulate either the right or left brain, it will still have a specific stimulating effect without the isolation of one ear from listening.

Ingredients that make our Right Brain music powerful!

Our beautiful “Paradise” album incorporates some elements that might have you wondering “Why the chants?” “What are they doing there?”

Dr. Melillo explains about the elements incorporated in our music and how they may be of benefit. He recommended these elements, and I, as the composer found them amazing to work with, putting me in a bit of trance, and I believe they can have the same effect on you too! I’m thinking, what better time than what we’re all going through right now, then to have something so deeply relaxing to listen to. Yes, you can benefit by just listening and enjoying! Any other benefits derived regarding brain balancing is an added plus!

I am also sharing with you here some of the sources and people involved in making this production of Paradise possible. Real authentic chants. Anmol Mehta, Trupti Mehta, a husband and wife team I was honored to be in communication with, who graciously allowed me to include their beautiful chants. Thank you Anmol and Trupti!

Here’s information from Dr. Melillo regarding the elements in our music:

Right Brain Stimulation Music
The right hemisphere develops first, developing in the womb and for the first 2-3 years of life. It does not have conscious memories of that time but it does remember. We have deep subconscious memories of that time of developing; we are affected by hearing a muffled heartbeat or deep breathing. It reminds us of our early life and of the womb.
Brain Balance Music tries to recreate all of these qualities. There are no words; we hear various types of chanting from different cultures and different religions. These evoke primal emotions for humans; they are activating the subconscious memories of early childhood.

They are very emotional, spiritual; they connect us to ourselves and the world around us and help us connect to the present, the now. They connect us to our self- awareness,to our body inside and out.
The music changes frequently, incorporating low frequency sounds that vary regularly.

The environmental sounds create visual, nonverbal images of the world. With Brain Balance Music for right brain stimulation we create a slight sense of foreboding, the sense that something potentially negative may be about to happen. Doing so heightens the right brain awareness and attention and stimulates the avoidance sensation, the negative emotions, and vigilance.

Thunder, lightening, and rain are all sounds that caused us fear or anxiety as a child and may still evoke these emotions unconsciously as an adult. All of this engages the right hemisphere, it stimulates it and it activates it to process this information. A deep driving drumbeat has always affected humans, creating deep primal emotions, helping us connect to our thoughts and emotions. It helps us to get into a deep meditative state where we can connect to the now. It helps us to achieve a “mindfulness state”, allowing us to connect our right hemisphere to our body, emotions, and to a particular time in space. It allows us to have a greater appreciation of emotions and of life around us.

Hanging in during this crazy time…Can music help with that?

I just wanted to offer a little encouragement right now. This is a very stressful time, that’s for sure. Unlike anything else we’ve very experienced. In an interview I saw today, Julie Andrews likens this time to being like a war. I’m not quoting exactly, but you get the drift…

Everyone’s situation is different of course. Some people have no choice but to be out there in the world and don’t have as much ability to protect themselves. It’s a fight for survival.

I would say that we need to keep those people in our thoughts and prayers and be grateful to be “stuck inside”, if we have the luxury to have that as our option, because not everybody is that fortunate.

I’d like to ask you, has music helped you at all during this time?

Music certainly can help us cope, take us to other places, tap into our emotions, restore a sense of peace, joy, serenity.

I would recommend relaxing music, or happy music. For your own stress levels, find something you can listen to that makes you feel better and keep listening to it.

Please contribute here and let me know what you’re listening to to get you through this time!

I look forward to all replies!

Lisa
